A practical guide to physical gold, graded coins and provenance — what physical gold is, how it is graded and priced, and how Hartco Aurum sources it for its clients.
Hartco Aurum is a specialist physical gold company. We focus on the sourcing of authenticated and professionally graded gold coins, alongside recognised gold coins and bespoke coin requirements — sourced for clients who want clarity, discretion and a personal service. We do not sell gold bars.
Our proposition is simple: personal, discreet, professionally sourced. We help each client understand the piece before they decide — what it is, its condition, how it is graded, and what it is worth at the time. An enquiry is not a commitment to buy or to sell.

Graded gold is the main commercial focus of Hartco Aurum. A graded gold coin is one that has been independently assessed by a recognised third-party grading service for both authenticity and condition, then sealed in a tamper-evident holder with its own certification number.
Grading removes doubt. It answers two questions before you buy: is the coin genuine? and what condition is it in? — and it records the answer in a way that can be verified.

Every graded coin is sealed in a holder with its grade and certification number. The number can be checked against the grading service's registry before you commit.
Grades run on the Sheldon scale, from 1 to 70. A Mint State (MS) coin shows no wear; MS-70 denotes a flawless coin with no visible imperfections under magnification. Specific grades are confirmed at the time of enquiry.
Recognised grading and certification services exist to give buyers confidence. Two of the most widely recognised are PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) and NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company). They are examples of the independent, third-party services whose holders Hartco Aurum works with.
These services assess a coin for authenticity and condition, then encapsulate it in a sealed holder that records the coin, the grade and a unique certification number.
Recognised gold coins are the most liquid and widely understood way to hold physical gold. They are government-minted, legal tender, and instantly recognised worldwide.
The British gold Sovereign — 22 carat (916.7), 7.988g, 7.322g of fine gold, legal tender with a £1 face value. Typically CGT-exempt for UK individuals. Often the first coin a client holds.
The modern one-ounce gold Britannia — 999.9 fine, 31.104g, legal tender with a £100 face value. Typically CGT-exempt for UK individuals. Also struck in 1/2oz, 1/4oz and 1/10oz.
The South African Krugerrand — the original modern bullion coin, and still one of the most traded gold coins in the world.
Other recognised gold coins and proof examples can be sourced on request, subject to availability.
Some clients look beyond standard bullion, to historic and collectable gold — coins with age, rarity or provenance that carry value beyond their metal content. Hartco Aurum sources these on request.
There is an important distinction. Bullion is bought for its metal value. Numismatic (collector) coins are bought for rarity and condition, and can carry premiums of 50–300% over the metal — value that depends on a thin collector market.
If your objective is gold, buy bullion, not collector coins sold as an “investment”. If your objective is a particular historic or collectable piece, Hartco can source it — but the two should not be confused.
Older gold coins with historical significance — sourced to requirement, with authenticity and condition verified before you commit.
Specific rare or collectable coins, discussed individually — with the premium and the market for that piece made clear.
Hartco Aurum sources to a specific requirement. Tell us what you are looking for, and we confirm what can actually be sourced — then you decide.
Hartco Aurum buys graded gold coins, gold coins and selected physical gold. We use an enquiry-first process — no price is promised before the item has been assessed.
Coin, grading details if held, approximate quantity, and whether you wish to sell some or all of it.
Hartco reviews the piece and confirms a current purchase price. The price is the price at the time — not a historic promise.
There is time to read the figures. Nothing proceeds until you confirm.
Collection or delivery, identity and provenance as required, and payment arranged properly.
Personal. Discreet. Professionally sourced. That is the standard for every enquiry, and every client.
Each client is dealt with directly, by a person, on their own objectives and requirements — never by a script.
Physical gold is a private matter. Hartco Aurum treats every transaction, and every holding, with discretion.
Every piece is sourced properly, verified for authenticity and condition, and confirmed — product, price and premium — before anything moves.
Keep graded coins in their sealed holders. Once the coin is in your possession, how you keep it is yours to decide.
Hartco Aurum does not forecast the price. But understanding a few core ideas helps you hold gold sensibly.
The spot price is the global wholesale price of one troy ounce of gold. You never buy at exact spot — you pay spot plus a premium, which covers minting, distribution and margin. Understanding that premium is the single most useful thing a buyer can learn. Hartco states the product, the current price and the premium clearly — before anything moves.

The value of physical gold can fall as well as rise, and there is no guaranteed return. If gold is later sold for more than the total acquisition cost, a client may make a profit; there is no guarantee of any profit. Past performance and market figures quoted in this guide are illustrative references, not forecasts and not Hartco selling prices.
Product availability, pricing, premiums, taxes and fulfilment arrangements are confirmed at the time of enquiry. Hartco does not provide tax advice; confirm with independent professional advice where appropriate.
