Hallmarking
1. What hallmarking is
A hallmark is an official mark applied by a UK Assay Office to confirm the fineness (purity) of precious metal. In the UK, hallmarking is governed by the Hallmarking Act 1973, and marks are applied by one of the four UK Assay Offices.
2. When hallmarking applies
The requirement to hallmark applies to certain precious-metal articles offered for sale by weight. It does not apply to every product. In particular, coins of the realm and many legal-tender coins are not required to carry a hallmark.
3. Coins sold by Hartco Aurum
The gold coins we source are typically legal-tender bullion or collectable coins and are generally exempt from hallmarking requirements. Their weight, fineness and authenticity are instead established by the coin's specification and, where applicable, independent third-party grading.
4. Confirmation per product
We will confirm the applicable hallmarking status and any relevant marks for the specific product at the time of enquiry or order.
